The event, with chief sponsors International Dive Expeditions, Sea & Sea Underwater Photography, Sabah (Malaysia) Tourism, Borneo Divers, Sipadan Water Village, Malaysia Airlines and Skin Diver magazine, brought both experienced and beginning photographers together to dive the beautiful waters of Labuan, Mabul and Sipadan, Malaysia and to learn photography from well-known industry pros Tom Campbell, Al Hornsby and Berkely White. Sea & Sea brought an immense selection of photographic gear, including cameras, housings, lenses and strobes for participants to try.

After five days of diving (attendees had a choice of resorts, Borneo Divers at Labuan or Sipadan, and Sipadan Water Village on Mabul Island) and shooting with the pros, participants flew to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia for a sumptuous banquet sponsored by Sabah Tourism, where they were awarded prizes for the winning photographs. Prizes included dive vacations provided by Borneo Divers and Sipadan Water Village, a hotel package by the Magellan Sutera Hotel, underwater photo equipment by Sea & Sea, underwater scooters by Aquadyne, clothing and accessories by Dive 44 and Rock N Sports, and subscriptions to—and publication of winning photos in—Skin Diver.

The 2001 event, now broadened and called The U/W Malaysia International Imaging Festival, which will include photography instruction and coaching for both experienced and beginner photographers, diving, seminars, gear demos, photo/video competitions and a film festival, has been scheduled for September 2-11, 2001 (with the film festival following on September 12).
