June is Scuba Month!

By Scott D. Jones

There’s National Fishing Month, National Skiing Month, even National Bowling Month. But until now, there has never been a National Scuba Month. Through the efforts of the recreational scuba industry and the non-profit Diving Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA), the month of June has been designated National Scuba Month. With that is an entire slate of events designed to bring divers around the world together to celebrate the sport. So if you’ve ever thought about bringing your spouse, a close friend or relative into diving, now’s your chance!

Help set a world record for the most divers in the water in a single day by diving on June 11. Dive-In Day is the cornerstone event of National Scuba Month.

One of the cornerstone events will be held June 11, when divers from all corners of the globe will work together to try and set a world record for the largest simultaneous dive during the second International Dive-In Day. “While we are attempting to set a world record, the true purpose of Dive-In Day and National Scuba Month is to unite divers in all walks of life by giving them an opportunity to celebrate scuba diving,” says Regina Franklin, executive director of DEMA. Last year, nearly 1,000 divers participated in the program and the early word is that this year’s event will surpass that number. In Southern California last year, more than 100 divers turned out in Redondo Beach to help get the program off the ground.

Another element of National Scuba Month is DEMA’s HammerHeads program, an international effort designed to stress the social aspect of scuba diving. Numerous HammerHead activities will also be taking place during the month of June and beyond. The San Francisco chapter will be hosting a dive in Monterey and the Los Angeles Hammerheads will be joining the King Underwater Clean Up in Redondo Beach. (For more details on this program, visit the Hammerheads web site at www.h-heads.com.)

The National Scuba Month promotion is also supported by Southern California–based Sport Chalet. “We’re pleased to be involved with National Scuba Month because it’s something that’s been needed for a long time,” said Sport Chalet’s Jason Gautereaux.

A group from Sport Chalet will be at LaJolla Cove near San Diego on Saturday, June 11 to lend their support for Dive-In Day. Those unable to travel to that site will also be able to participate through local Sport Chalet outlets and at other beach sites in Southern California. Gautereaux encourages every diver to try and take part.

During the month of June, Sport Chalet is introducing a number of special programs designed to attract more people to diving, making it easy for them to get started. These programs, which will include special product offers and programs, will be implemented at each of the 21 Sport Chalet outlets during June.

“We’re offering a free scuba experience to anyone who wants to bring their swimsuit and come to one of our stores with a pool,” he says. “For younger divers, we are providing free PADI Bubblemaker and SASY programs so youngsters can get a feel for diving at a young age.” Gautereaux adds that certified divers will also be able to take advantage of free skill refresher programs to get ready for the coming summer season in California.

Sport Chalet, which has one of the largest scuba diving clubs in all of Southern California, also offers programs that encourage social interaction and travel. Later this year, Sport Chalet will sponsor the Los Cabos Fall Dive Fiesta. This unique dive festival, to be held in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, is co-sponsored by Skin Diver and is designed to offer divers excellent diving opportunities, fun in the sun and relaxation.
